Don't Give Up on Jeff Allison

It's easy to give up on a spoiled, would-be star after he single-handedly wrecks his own career three times, but I urge you to give Jeff Allison another chance.

At some point, our judgment should stop focusing on accountability. We know Jeff Allison made some horrendous personal choices, that he did little to endear himself to an organization that risked its back pocket for him, and that he could easily revert back to his old ways. Those are all givens.

The thing is, he's an enormous talent. As Future Fish eloquently explains, he just might be worth believing in again. I agree wholeheartedly, and I can't wait to see if this troubled kid can finally find his way to the majors.

One additional note: In Allison's defense, his addiction problems are not representative of weak character. It has been well documented that pain-killers can overwhelm even the most exemplary people. As human beings, let's hope he's permanently beyond Oxycontin and Heroine.

I put my faith in Allison the last time he was supposedly making a comeback. I admire your hopefulness, but this guy is a rotten apple. Don't invest too much in him. He'll surely disappoint.

I agree -- nothing's impossible. Just look at Josh Hamilton. He was suspended for years, gets his act together, is thrown into the Majors as a Rule 5 pick and has been a major asset for the Reds and now the Rangers.

As a former Peabody(pronounced PBD) resident while Jeff was in High School everyone knew he was taking OC's the coach knew, teachers knew, even the custodian's knew, but no one cared because he was a great pitcher and in Peabody athletes are allowed to do basically what they want and had a baseball coach who encouraged the use of steriods, telling some students that wanted to stay on the team, they needed to "take something to pitch harder and increase arm strength" the environment this kid was in he is lucky to be alive, because as long as he was a top prospect no one seemed to care how he did it.

Thanks for that story, anonymous. I'm wondering if after all that, you still believe in him. Maybe he's finally turned the corner?
